Palma’s Cathedral, Santa Maria, also called Seu de Mallorca, is an impressive building which towers over the entire city overlooking the sea, and its sight is what strikes the visitor since his arrival in Palma.
Built in Gothic Catalan style, the huge structure is slightly lightened by the buttresses, but the impressive bulk is what makes the church so charming. The rectangular plant measures 6.655 square mt, while the vault reaches 44 metres, for a total volume of 160.000 cubic metres!
The time employed to build the church is as relevant as the construction self: Jaume I ordered the construction of the temple to fulfil a vow he had made when he and his troops were caught by a storm while reaching Mallorca. The first stone was laid in 1229. but works continued until 1601, and the final touches date back to 1904, with the contribution of Gaudi, who also made the rose window. This rose window, with a diameter of 12.55 mt, is said to be the biggest in the world.
Gaudi freed the perspective of the nave by moving the choir behind the main altar; also, he embellished the pillars with chandeliers and gave the naves a new light, adding colours to the windows and chandeliers.
Inside the Chapel of the Santissimo, a huge ceramic wall painting of 300 sq. meters can be admired, which was designed by the local artist Miguel Barcelò.
On the left side of the painting an enormous wave moves octopus, groups of sardines, eels and sword fish, while in the middle stands the life-size statue of Christ. On the right wall are represented bread and products of the earth. Finally, 5 windows, each 12 metres, high complete the masterpiece.
The windows were made in Toulouse by some glass makers. In proximity of the cathedral also stand the Almudaina Palace and the Episcopal palace of Mallorca.
